About This Tea

Pearl is the highest quality loose leaf green tea we stock. Whole leaves are hand rolled into small dense pearls, a technique borrowed from high grade Chinese green tea production and applied to Indian leaf. The pearls open slowly in hot water and release flavour gradually, so the brew builds and changes as you drink it.

The flavour profile of Pearl Green Tea is distinctly clean and mellow: a light grassy note at the start, followed by a smooth, slightly sweet body, and a clean, refreshing finish with no bitterness. This is because the hand-rolling process preserves the natural L-theanine content of the leaf, the amino acid responsible for green tea's characteristic calm focus, while protecting the delicate EGCG catechins from oxidation.

Because the whole leaf is used intact rather than broken or cut, Pearl retains more of the leaf's catechins than a broken leaf or fannings grade tea does. It is low in caffeine, which makes it fine for the morning without jitteriness and gentle enough for the afternoon.

How to Brew: Use 1 tsp (2 to 3 pearls = 2g) per 200ml at 75 to 80°C. Steep 2 to 3 minutes. Watch the pearls unfurl, it is part of the ritual. Can be re-brewed 3 to 4 times.

Cold brewing Pearl

Pearl is the best loose leaf tea for cold brew we sell. Put one tablespoon of pearls in 500ml of cold water, leave it in the fridge overnight, and strain in the morning. Cold water pulls out the sweetness and leaves the tannins behind, so the result is smoother and sweeter than anything you can brew hot. It keeps three days refrigerated.

Frequently Asked Questions

What makes Pearl Green Tea different from regular green tea?
Pearl Green Tea uses whole leaves hand-rolled into pearls, unlike the broken or fannings-grade leaf in most tea bags. Whole leaves release flavour gradually, delivering a smoother and more complex brew.
How many times can I re-brew the pearls?
Pearl Green Tea can be re-brewed 3 to 4 times. Each infusion reveals a slightly different flavour profile, later brews are lighter and increasingly sweet.
Is Pearl Green Tea good for weight loss?
Pearl retains more of the leaf's natural catechins than broken leaf grades, simply because the leaf is whole. We would not sell it to you as a weight loss product. It is a very good green tea that happens to be a zero calorie drink.
Can I brew it cold?
Yes. Cold-brew Pearl Green Tea by adding 1 tbsp of pearls to 500ml cold water and steeping overnight in the refrigerator. The result is an exceptionally smooth, sweet cold brew with minimal bitterness.
What temperature should I use?
75 to 80°C. Boiling water damages the EGCG catechins and creates bitterness. Let boiled water cool for 2 to 3 minutes before brewing.
