Matcha vs loose leaf green tea: Which should you choose?

Matcha is powdered green tea that you whisk into water and drink with the leaf. Loose leaf green tea is steeped, then strained. Choose matcha if you enjoy a fuller texture and whisking ritual. Choose loose leaf if you prefer a clear infusion and a simple strainer.
The comparison is getting more attention in India. Google reported in September 2026 that searches for “how to make matcha” rose 1,300% over the previous year. That measures search interest, not sales or a reason to replace a tea you already enjoy. Source: Google India.
What is the difference in the cup?
| Question | Matcha | Loose leaf green tea |
|---|---|---|
| What do you prepare? | A fine green tea powder | Intact or broken tea leaves |
| How do you make it? | Whisk the powder into water | Steep the leaves and strain |
| What is the texture? | Suspended leaf gives more body | A clearer, lighter infusion |
| What equipment helps? | A bowl and whisk | A mug and roomy infuser |
| Can you make another infusion? | The powder is consumed in the first drink | Some leaves can be steeped again |
Traditional matcha comes from shaded tea plants and is ground into powder. It is not simply a household tea leaf crushed in a mixer. Ippodo’s introduction to Japanese tea explains the production distinction.
Which tastes better for a beginner?
If your usual order is a sweet café latte, first decide whether you like the tea itself or the finished drink. Milk, syrup and fruit can change the experience substantially. Compare plain matcha with plain green tea before deciding that one tea category tastes sweeter.
For loose leaf, choose the flavour direction you want. A jasmine green tea adds floral aroma. An everyday green offers a more straightforward leaf flavour. Rolled green tea gives you the extra pleasure of watching the leaves open. None needs to be your permanent choice.

How to compare them fairly at home
- Make a small serving of each using its own packet instructions.
- Use the same drinking water and leave sweetener out of the first tasting.
- Let both drinks cool enough to taste comfortably.
- Write down aroma, texture and whether you want another sip.
- Then try your preferred milk or sweetener, if that is how you will actually drink it.
This is a personal tasting exercise, not a laboratory comparison. Using identical temperatures and quantities for every tea can be less useful than preparing each one as intended.
Compare the cost of the drink you actually make
Divide the pack price by its weight, then multiply by the grams used in one serving. Add milk or syrup separately. For example, a hypothetical ₹400 pack weighing 100 g costs ₹8 in tea at a 2 g dose. This is an illustration, not a current product price.
Count a second infusion only if you enjoy it and will drink it. An imagined extra cup does not lower your real cost. A smaller pack can also be the better first purchase if it prevents a large unused pouch sitting in your cupboard.
Where Brew Your Sip fits
Our Green Tea Discovery Set contains three 20 g pouches: Pearl, Marvel and Jasmine. It is an introduction to loose leaf green tea, not a matcha substitute. Start here if you want to explore leaf styles with equipment you already own.
Common questions
Is matcha the same as green tea?
Matcha is a type of green tea. The practical difference is that you consume the powder instead of removing steeped leaves.
Which has more caffeine?
There is no reliable comparison without the serving size and product information. Both contain caffeine. Do not assume a pale cup is caffeine free.
Can I make loose leaf green tea in a mug?
Yes. Use a roomy infuser or brew in one heatproof vessel and strain into another. Follow the instructions for that tea.
