About This Tea

Earl Grey loose leaf tea, made properly. We start with premium Assam black tea, chosen for its bold malty body, and blend it with natural bergamot oil cold pressed from the rind of Citrus bergamia. The difference between this and a supermarket tea bag is the bergamot: natural oil releases slowly through the brew, where synthetic bergamot hits sharp at the front and disappears.

It pairs well with the deep tannic body of Assam, giving a cup that is bold and refined at the same time, and it takes milk better than most flavoured teas do.

The bergamot flavanones, naringenin and neohesperidin among them, are of research interest, and the Assam base carries roughly 40 to 70mg of caffeine a cup, about half an espresso. That is as far as we will take the health talk.

Available in 250g and 500g resealable pouches.

How to Brew: Use 1 tsp (2.5g) per 200ml at 90 to 95°C. Steep 3 to 4 minutes. Excellent with a thin slice of lemon. Can also be brewed with a small splash of milk.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is bergamot?
Bergamot is a citrus fruit (Citrus bergamia) grown mainly in Calabria, Italy. Its cold-pressed rind oil has a distinctive floral-citrus aroma and is the defining ingredient of Earl Grey tea.
Does Earl Grey have caffeine?
Yes. As a black tea base, Earl Grey contains approximately 40 to 70mg of caffeine per 200ml cup, roughly half the caffeine of a standard espresso, providing a clean energy lift.
Can I drink Earl Grey with milk?
Yes, though purists prefer it black with a lemon slice. A splash of full-cream milk softens the tannins and creates a creamier, more rounded flavour.
What are the health benefits of Earl Grey?
There is research interest in the bergamot flavanones and in black tea polyphenols generally. Nothing about a cup of tea is a medical intervention, and we would rather you drank it because you like it.
How is loose-leaf Earl Grey better than tea bags?
Loose-leaf uses whole or large-cut leaves that allow full infusion of bergamot oil throughout the brew. Tea bags use dust-grade leaf remnants that lose volatile aromatics quickly and produce a flat, one-dimensional cup.
